*Rare Relic: German, WWI, Model 1917 n/A Egg Hand Fragmentation Grenade - Eierhandgranate, with chain fuze, Inert*
This is an excellent example of the second type "new model" (n/A or neu Art) Eierhandgranate ("egg hand grenade"), identifiable by its distinctive raised central band.
The Eierhandgranate Mod. 1917 was a German hand-thrown fragmentation grenade used during World War I. Compact and versatile, it was a smaller and more portable alternative to the heavier Kugelhandgranate and less cumbersome than the stick grenade. Its compact size allowed the average soldier to throw it 40 meters or farther, making it effective in both offensive and defensive roles.
Initially, the grenade's body featured a smooth surface, which made it difficult to grip. To address this, the design was updated to include a raised central band, improving handling. The Model 39 grenade, introduced in World War II, drew inspiration from this earlier design, further evolving the concept of a small, efficient hand grenade for German forces.
