*Rare: French, Third Republic Period c.1890–1910, Child’s Model 1882 Infantry Officer’s Cadet Sword*

A scarce and highly attractive French Third Republic period miniature officer’s sword, closely modelled on the famous French Modèle 1882 Infantry Officer’s épée and produced in child-sized or cadet proportions during the late 19th to early 20th century. Unlike many simple toy swords of the era, this example is of notably higher construction quality, faithfully replicating the distinctive asymmetrical blade geometry and flowing four-bar guard design of the full-sized regulation officer’s weapon.

The sword retains its original steel four-bar guard with rounded quillon terminals together with its ribbed wooden grip beneath a steel backstrap and pommel cap. The proportions are exceptionally well executed, measuring approximately two-thirds the size of the regulation French infantry officer’s sword and giving the piece an unmistakably authentic military appearance. The guard bars are elegantly formed rather than crudely stamped, reinforcing the impression that this was intended as a genuine miniature presentation, cadet, or juvenile dress sword rather than a simple fairground toy.

Particularly interesting is the blade itself, which retains the complex offset épée geometry associated with the Model 1882 pattern. The blade features a pronounced medial ridge together with a curved and hollowed reverse side rather than a simple flat section, accurately echoing the sophisticated thrust-oriented blade design of the adult officer’s sword. This level of detail is highly unusual on children’s swords and strongly suggests manufacture by a competent military outfitter or continental cutler during the period.

Faint tiny marks remain visible to the ricasso, though now heavily worn and indistinct through age and oxidation. These appear to be original workshop or inspection punches rather than later additions, but are unfortunately no longer clear enough for positive attribution. The overall form and construction are entirely consistent with French or Belgian production of the late Victorian / Edwardian era.

Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 52 cm. Overall length: 61.5 cm.

History Note:
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, miniature military swords were produced across Europe for cadet institutions, ceremonial juvenile dress, and the sons of military officers and aristocratic families. These scaled versions often mirrored contemporary regulation service swords and were intended to accompany formal uniforms, military schooling, or patriotic presentation. French officer’s swords of the Third Republic period were especially influential in design, and the distinctive Model 1882 épée became one of the defining military sword patterns of the era.

*Condition*
An untouched and honest example showing age-related wear throughout. The steel hilt and blade retain an attractive aged patina with scattered oxidation and surface marking consistent with long-term storage. The rear guard branch is broken and detached at the upper junction. The wooden grip shows shrinkage, age cracking, surface wear, and losses around the upper section near the pommel cap. The blade remains structurally sound with good definition to the original profile and medial ridge. No scabbard present. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
