“British, Dated Feb 1897, Royal Navy Leadcutter / Naval Cutlass by Robert Mole & Sons, Birmingham – War Department Marked – Victorian Naval Issue” has been added to your cart. View cart
This is an 1852 Model Prussian Naval cutlass which was the first cutlass to be designed by the German States. This particular model can be closely associated with the earlier French Models such as the M1801. Much like the French Cutlasses, the 1852 Model has a very similar bowl guard, featuring the 5 lobe quillon and almost identical shape. Inscribed on the guard is “726A” which is most likely the weapon’s rack number. The G at the base of the blade stands for “Guss Stahl” or “cast steel” .These swords would have been used throughout the Danish-Prussian and Austro-Prussian wars during the 19th century.
*Condition*
This cutlass has some heavy pitting to the blade and guard which is to be expected from an item with its age and usage at sea. However, proof marks around the base of the blade and guard are visible and clear. The grip has some damage to the inside near the pommel but remains strong and mostly undamaged. Please see pictures for more detail as they form part of our condition report.
