*Portuguese M1904 Sword Bayonet and Scabbard by Simson & Co, Suhl*

This is a Portuguese sword bayonet designed to be used with the 6.5 mm M1904 Mauser-Vergueiro rifle. Notably, it was also compatible with the 8 mm M1904/39 Mauser-Vergueiro Short Rifle conversion. It's worth noting that M1904 bayonets have a shorter hilt compared to M1908 and later Mauser bayonets, making them exclusively suitable for M1904 Mauser rifles.

The Portuguese M1904 rifles are believed to have been manufactured around the years 1904 to 1907 by DWM using Simson & Co. to produce them in Germany. It is estimated that around 75,000 of these bayonets were completed before Portugal faced financial constraints that hindered further production. Unfortunately, there are no existing production records available. Portugal, being one of the most financially challenged Western European countries, grappled with ongoing economic difficulties during this period.

This has serial number D4030 on the pommel. The makers name engraved on the ricasso " Simson & Co Shul", a proof mark X on the crossguard. Single edge fullered blade. The original bayonet finish was in white. M1904 bayonets were later blued during rework. Dark blued pommel with T-O slot and crossguard. Dark blued crossguard with muzzle ring. Wooden grips secured to the blade tang by screw bolts. Metal Scabbard. 402mm overall, 278mm blade.

*Condition*
This bayonet is in excellent condition. the blued blade is in mint condition. The grip is very tidy and only has minor signs of wear and tear. the press button works well. The scabbard fits snugly and is in good condition with minor signs of wear and tear. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
