*Ottoman Turkey, 1895, Mauser Model 1890 Bayonet, Military Arsenal Dated, Extensive Turkish Markings*

An original Ottoman Turkish Mauser bayonet, Model 1890 pattern, with full-length single-fullered blade and distinctive hooked quillon, mounted with wooden grip scales secured by domed rivets. The bayonet measures 44.4 cm blade length and 57.1 cm overall, consistent with early Ottoman Mauser bayonet specifications.

The steel surfaces display an untouched, even patina with service wear and oxidation consistent with long military use. The wooden grips show honest wear and age darkening. The pommel bears an Ottoman star inspection mark one one side and a moon on the other, the Toughra of the Sultan on the pommel, a further moon and star on the spine, a star on the crossguard , all typical of period military acceptance. The ricasso is stamped in Ottoman Turkish (Arabic script) with the standard Military Arsenal acceptance inscription

سلاحخانه عسکری

١٣١٣

Transliterated as Silâhhâne-i Askerî, translating to “Military Arsenal”, and dated Hijri 1313, corresponding to 1895 AD. This confirms early Ottoman acceptance and is characteristic of bayonets supplied for the Mauser Model 1890 rifle contracts. The crossguard is stamped 1179٨г, recorded exactly as struck.

Historical Note:
Ottoman Turkey contracted with Mauser of Germany to supply rifles of the latest design as part of a wide-ranging programme of military modernisation in the late 19th century. It is estimated that approximately 280,000 Model 1890 rifles were produced for Ottoman service, and a broadly similar number of bayonets are believed to have been manufactured. As with many Ottoman Mauser bayonets, this example would also fit the later Turkish Model 1938 rifle, reflecting the long operational life and repeated re-issue of Ottoman edged weapons into the Republican period.

Bayonets accepted in 1895 (Hijri 1313) represent some of the earliest Ottoman Mauser bayonets and were issued well before the outbreak of the First World War. Despite their early introduction, examples of this pattern remained in frontline service throughout WWI, carried by Ottoman troops fighting against Australian, New Zealand, British, and Indian forces (including Gurkhas) during campaigns in Gallipoli, Egypt, and Palestine.
