*Original Confederate States of America (C.S.A.) Rectangular Belt Plate, Cast Brass, Civil War Pattern*
A cast brass rectangular belt plate bearing the raised block letters “C.S.A.” within a plain raised border. The plate measures approximately 6 cm in width and 4.2 cm in height and is formed with a natural curvature consistent with belt wear and period style manufacture.
The lettering is bold and well defined, standing proud against a textured field. The surface displays an attractive aged patina with areas of green verdigris within the recesses and around the reverse fittings. The reverse is fitted with a three-part fastening arrangement consisting of two curved belt hooks and a separate tongue stud, all securely attached and integral to the casting. The brass has developed an even, convincing tone across both face and reverse.
This is a well-made example in the classic Confederate rectangular pattern and presents strongly as a display piece.
History:
Rectangular “C.S.A.” belt plates are among the most recognisable accoutrements associated with Confederate forces during the American Civil War of 1861–1865. Due to decentralised wartime production, original examples varied considerably in casting quality, font style, and attachment methods.
*Condition*
Very good condition overall. The raised lettering remains strong and clearly defined. The surface exhibits natural age-related oxidation and verdigris consistent with brass. The reverse hooks and stud are secure and undamaged. There are no cracks, splits, or repairs observed. The plate retains an attractive, untouched appearance.
