*US M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle, B.A.R. with Bipod and Leather Strap. Deactivated*
Serial number 636551. .30/06" Calibre. 595mm Barrel Length. Manufactured by small arms corp.
The M1918, the primary BAR series model created by John Browning in 1917, was designed to serve the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe, replacing French-made Chauchat and M1909 Benét–Mercié machine guns issued to US troops. It was chambered for the .30-06 Springfield rifle cartridge and aimed to provide infantrymen with "walking fire" capabilities during trench warfare, either carried on the shoulder or fired from the hip. Despite high hopes, it didn't fully meet the War Department's expectations as either a rifle or a machine gun.
In practical use, the US Army mainly utilized the BAR as a light machine gun, often with a bipod (introduced in models after 1938) for support. However, its 20-round magazine limited its effectiveness. Although the BAR saw limited action in late 1918 during World War I, it only became standard issue in 1938. It played significant roles in World War II and the Korean War, with some use in Vietnam. The BAR began to phase out in the 1950s, making way for the M14's squad automatic weapon variant, and the US Army didn't have a portable light machine gun until the introduction of the M60 in 1957.
121cm in length.
