*Northern Ireland, 2006, Ulster Bank £5 George Best Commemorative Banknote, Presentation Folder & Three Notes*

Three uncirculated, mint, original Ulster Bank £5 George Best commemorative banknotes, were issued in November 2006 to mark the life and legacy of Northern Ireland’s greatest footballer. The notes are presented alongside the original Ulster Bank commemorative presentation folder, produced to accompany the release.

The notes feature a finely engraved portrait of George Best, with dynamic footballing vignettes showing him in both Northern Ireland international kit and Manchester United colours, reflecting the dual pillars of his career. The design is widely regarded as one of the most visually successful modern British banknotes.

Issued in a limited run of one million notes, these were legal tender at the time of issue, though the vast majority were retained as souvenirs rather than circulated. Today they are collected primarily as numismatic and sporting memorabilia rather than for face value.

Historical Note:
George Best (1946–2005) was one of the most gifted footballers of the 20th century. A European Footballer of the Year (1968) and European Cup winner with Manchester United, his influence extended far beyond club football, becoming an enduring cultural figure in Northern Ireland and internationally.

Ulster Bank issued these commemorative £5 note one year after his death, making it the first UK banknote to feature a footballer as its central subject. The accompanying presentation folder includes period text, career highlights, and a contemporary tribute to Best’s sporting legacy.

*Condition*
The banknotes are uncirculated, retaining crisp colour, sharp edges, and no evidence of handling or folding. The presentation folder shows visible creasing and handling wear, most notably along the folds and edges, consistent with storage rather than misuse. Overall, the notes remain in excellent collector condition. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
