*Late 18th Century, Flintlock Pistol by AMR (C28) – Engraved Brass Furniture & Chequered Grip, Obsolete Calibre*
A fine late 18th century flintlock pistol of classic form, marked AMR C28 and numbered 26912, with foliate engraving and brass furniture throughout. The pistol measures approximately 43 cm overall with a 26.5 cm barrel, featuring a rounded walnut stock with chequered grip and bulbous pommel, a single brass trigger-guard, and decorative side-plate engraved with a knight’s helm and foliate scrollwork. The barrel is of octagonal-to-round form, lightly engraved to the top flat and stamped with a lozenge enclosing AMR, flanked by C28 and the number 26912, suggesting a small independent maker or regional workshop active in the late 18th century.
The lock is of conventional flint ignition pattern, with swan-neck cock, roller frizzen, and foliate engraved lockplate. The pistol retains its brass furniture, including trigger-guard, side escutcheon and muzzle cap, all showing a warm patina consistent with age. The stock exhibits attractive figure and well-defined chequering, typical of Georgian pistols made for private or officer’s use rather than ordnance issue.
Measurements: Overall length: 43 cm (16.9 in). Barrel length: 26.5 cm (10.4 in)
Historical Note: By the mid-to-late 18th century, pistols of this form were carried by both naval officers and gentlemen for personal defence. While large-scale London makers such as Twigg, Ketland, and Wogdon dominated the high-end trade, numerous smaller workshops—both in Britain and on the Continent—produced finely finished pistols to similar pattern, often bearing only initials rather than full names. The AMR C28 mark, along with the engraved numbering, points to a small artisanal gunsmith or regional contractor working to established Georgian military and civilian styles, reflecting the widespread demand for sidearms during the late flintlock era.
*Condition* Please see photographs as part of the condition report. The pistol presents well with attractive age patina. The walnut stock shows a stable crack to the fore-end, with some bruising and minor wear consistent with age. Chequering remains visible though softened by handling. Metalwork shows even dark patination, scattered oxidation, and softened engraving. Brass fittings show mellow toning and surface marks from use. The flintlock mechanism is complete with cock, frizzen, and pan intact; action not tested and sold as a non-firing antique. Bore not inspected; muzzle clean and unobstructed. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
