A striking limited edition woodcut print by the renowned Japanese artist Nana Shiomi (b.1956), titled "The Other Side of the Sliding Door – Hokusai. ふすまの向う側 — 北斎" (Which reads as Fusuma no Mukōgawa — Hokusai (literally, “The Other Side of the Sliding Door — Hokusai”)). This example is numbered 22/30 and hand-signed by the artist in pencil to the lower margin. Created in 2004, this limited edition woodcut exemplifies Shiomi’s dialogue with traditional Japanese printmaking, reimagined through a contemporary lens.
The work depicts a symbolic reinterpretation of traditional Japanese interiors and sliding screen perspectives, with sheets of paper floating into the horizon under a bold red sky. Shiomi’s meticulous use of line and colour balance is on full display, fusing contemporary abstraction with homage to Japanese printmaking traditions.

Artist Note:
Nana Shiomi is a Japanese printmaker working primarily in the medium of woodcut. Educated in Japan and later at the Royal College of Art, London, she has exhibited internationally. Her work often reflects dialogues with historic Japanese masters such as Hokusai and Hiroshige, while maintaining a distinctly contemporary voice. Shiomi’s prints are held in prestigious collections worldwide, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Ashmolean Museum.

The print is in excellent condition, with no visible fading or foxing. The paper is clean, and colours remain vivid. Frame and glazing are in very good order, with only minor handling wear to the frame edges consistent with age. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
