37.5cm overall

A Japanese carved bone tanto, Meiji period, in slightly curved form, the scabbard and handle carved with scenes of ladies with fans, children and noblemen outside houses. This style, often carried by Samurai women concealed in their kimonos, features meticulously carved handles and scabbards that tell a story. The carvings are believed to depict actual individuals from that period or earlier. The detailed faces in the carvings remain clear and can still evoke the emotions of that time and place.

This is a beautifully carved Tanto in almost pristine condition. there is a small chip to the base of the scabbard and two small cracks on the throat of the scabbard. There is slight crack across the middle of the scabbard where the two carvings would have been joined. Scabbard slightly loose. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
