The Samurai, a renowned military caste in Japan from the 12th Century until the Meiji period, played a significant role in shaping and governing the country. They had the exclusive privilege to own and publicly wear swords, typically a pair known as Daisho. The common pairing included the Katana and the Wakizashi.
The term "katana" first appears in Japanese in the Nihon Shoki of 720, a compound of "kata" (one side) + "na" (blade). A katana is a standard-sized, moderately curved Japanese sword with a blade length greater than 60.6 cm (23.86 inches). It has a distinctive appearance with a curved, slender, single-edged blade, a circular or squared guard (tsuba), and a long grip for two-handed use. The katana was traditionally worn with the cutting edge up.
