*Italian, 2007, F.LLI Pietta Reproduction Starr Model 1858 Pattern Army Revolver, .44 Calibre Percussion, 6-Shot, UK/EU Deactivated*
A modern Italian reproduction of the Starr Model 1858 Army double-action percussion revolver, manufactured by F.LLI Pietta. With blued barrel and cylinder, colour case-hardened frame, one-piece wooden grip, and under-barrel loading lever. This example is a .44 calibre, six-shot cap-and-ball pattern, bearing period-style markings including “STARR ARMS Co. NEW YORK.” and “STARR’S PATENT JAN. 15. 1856” together with serial G03291.
The barrel is stamped “F.LLI PIETTA – MADE IN ITALY” with the FAP maker’s mark, and the opposing flat is marked “BLACK POWDER ONLY .44 CAL.” Italian proof marks are present, including star over PN (black powder proof) and the Gardone proof device, together with a boxed “CB” date code indicating 2007 proof.
The revolver has subsequently been UK/EU deactivated, bearing EU / GB conformity marks. The hammer is immobilised as part of the deactivation process, while the trigger moves freely, the cylinder rotates, and the loading lever operates, making it suitable for display and handling.
Approx. Measurements – Barrel length: approx. 15 cm. Overall length: 29.5 cm.
Historical Note:
The original Starr Model 1858 was one of the principal percussion revolvers issued to Union forces during the American Civil War. Manufactured by the Starr Arms Company of New York and carrying the 1856 patent date, it was notable for its unusual double-action mechanism with separate cocking and firing triggers, representing one of the more advanced military revolver designs of the period. Although produced in significant numbers—third in issue quantity behind Colt and Remington revolvers—the design proved comparatively complex, leading to the adoption of a simplified single-action variant later in the war.
Modern reproductions such as this example were produced by Italian makers including F.LLI Pietta for historical shooting, collecting, and re-enactment, faithfully copying the form and markings of the original Civil War pattern revolver.
