*Italian, 2002, Replica Colt “Sheriff’s 1855” Percussion Revolver by F.LLI Pietta, 9mm K (Obsolete Calibre), Inert*
An Italian-manufactured six-shot percussion revolver by F.LLI Pietta (FAP – Fabbrica Armi Pietta), marked on the right-hand side of the barrel with the FAP logo within a diamond together with “F.LLI Pietta – Made in Italy” and on the left hand side the model designation “Sheriff’s 1855 Cal. 9mm K.”
The revolver is a modern reproduction of a mid-19th-century American Colt-pattern percussion sidearm in the popular short-barrel “Sheriff’s” configuration. It features a round barrel, fluted six-shot cylinder, brass trigger guard and backstrap, and varnished wooden grip scales, all consistent with Pietta’s frontier-style percussion replicas.
The revolver is chambered in 9mm K (Kurz) obsolete/blank calibre, a format commonly used in European reproduction percussion revolvers intended for display, theatrical, or collector ownership under less restrictive licensing categories. The action is of single-action type and this example half-cocks, cocks, and dry-fires correctly, indicating functioning lockwork.
The frame bears additional Italian proof marks including a boxed “BS” date code, confirming proof at Gardone Val Trompia in 2002. All visible markings remain clear and legible.
Approx. Measurements – Barrel length: 12.4 cm. Overall length: 27 cm.
Historical Note: F.LLI Pietta, based in Gussago in the Brescia/Gardone arms-making district of northern Italy, is one of the principal modern manufacturers of historical firearm reproductions. From the mid-20th century onward the company became well known for producing replicas of classic American percussion revolvers such as the Colt 1851 Navy and 1860 Army for collectors, reenactors, and the film industry.
The “Sheriff’s” pattern refers to shortened-barrel variants inspired by easily carried civilian or law-enforcement sidearms of the American frontier era. While not always exact copies of a single historical Colt model, these revolvers were designed to evoke period forms and handling characteristics in a compact format.
Italian proofing law requires all firearms and blank-calibre replicas to be tested at official proof houses, with a boxed two-letter date code used to indicate year of proof. The “BS” mark present on this revolver corresponds to 2002, placing manufacture in the later period of Pietta production when machining and finish quality had generally improved over earlier decades.
Today, Pietta percussion revolvers are widely used in historical interpretation, theatrical work, and collecting, representing the continuation of the long-established Brescia tradition of arms manufacture.
