133cm five band barrel (one band is missing), flared. Marked on the barrel JPR/EXP/2226, meaning this particular matchlock is from the Jaipur Armoury. The barrel has some light surface rust but the overall build quality and finish is very good. The majority of the matchlock consists of red hardwood stock, which has a fine smooth polish to it. Fitted with a rear sight. Comes complete with original long ramrod.

The matchlock mechanism features a clamp at the end of a curved lever called the serpentine, which held a burning slow match. When a lever or trigger connected to the serpentine was pulled, the clamp dropped down, igniting the priming powder by lowering the smoldering match into the flash pan. This mechanism remained in common use for over two centuries. However, a notable weakness of the matchlock was its reliance on keeping the match constantly lit. This proved challenging in wet conditions, as damp match cord was hard to ignite and maintain. Additionally, the burning match posed risks, as its glow could reveal the carrier's position at night, and its distinct smell could give away a musketeer's location. Moreover, soldiers had to be careful when handling gunpowder in the presence of lit matches, as it could be dangerous, especially during tasks like refilling powder horns.

The Jaipur Arsenal, situated in Jaipur, India, was a key center for firearm production and maintenance during colonial times. Established by Jaipur rulers, it supplied weapons to the British Indian Army and serviced firearms for operational readiness. Skilled craftsmen managed its operations, blending traditional techniques with modern methods. After India's independence in 1947, its role declined, but it remains a symbol of India's martial heritage.
