*Imperial German, WW2, 15cm sFH 13 Heavy Howitzer Shell Case, Dated 1915, Polte (MPZ), Fired Primer “Schlagzünder Ckl 14”*

A First World War German brass cartridge case for the 15cm sFH 13 heavy field howitzer, manufactured in 1915 by Polte’s Zella-Mehlis plant (MPZ). This is the correct short-pattern case with a base diameter of approx. 17cm, mouth diameter 15.5cm, and height 11.4cm. The exterior shows rich multicoloured toning from age and heat exposure, while the interior retains deep wartime patination and verdigris typical of a fired case.

The base is clearly stamped with the Polte maker code MPZ, the metallurgical/process code GfSP, the Spandau Arsenal acceptance stamp SP4, the production lot 181, and the date 1915. The original fired percussion primer remains in place, its circular primer plate bearing the script-style marking “Schlagzünder Ckl 14”, denoting a WWI Polte-type percussion primer of Charge Class 14. Three original staked crimps hold the primer plate securely in the primer pocket.

Historical Note:
The 15cm sFH 13 (schwere Feldhaubitze 13) was the backbone of German heavy field artillery during the First World War, serving on all fronts from 1914 to 1918. Its short brass case, easily recognisable by its wide 170mm rim and low height, held the propellant charges for the 15cm HE and shrapnel shells that formed the core of German bombardments throughout the war.

Polte (MPZ) was one of Germany’s principal ammunition producers, and cases were inspected at the Königliches Arsenal Spandau, the largest Prussian state ordnance arsenal. The inspector code SP4 identifies the particular Spandau inspection office. The primer inscription “Schlagzünder Ckl 14” confirms a Polte-type percussion primer of Charge Class 14, a fully correct component for 15cm heavy howitzer ammunition in the 1914–1916 period. After the war, many fired cases were salvaged and repurposed for domestic or workshop use; their large size made them ideal as containers, vessels, or trench-art pieces.

*Condition*
Good, untouched condition with strong iridescent oxidation and age-darkened brass tones. Interior exhibits blackened propellant staining, verdigris patches, and the typical corrosion pattern of a fired case. Mouth edge is cleanly cut, standard for post-war repurposing. Base markings remain legible and well-struck. Primer plate is original, fired, and correctly marked, with intact staking crimps. No cracks or structural issues. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
