*Imperial German, WW1, Trench Art Cigarette Case with Original Inset Iron Cross 2nd Class (EK2)*

A fine and evocative example of First World War German trench art — a brass cigarette case incorporating an Iron Cross 2nd Class (Eisernes Kreuz II. Klasse), mounted through the lid to display both sides of the decoration. The exterior face shows the standard 1914 obverse with Imperial crown, W cipher for Kaiser Wilhelm II, and date 1914; the interior reveals the reverse with FW monogram, crown, and founding date 1813.

The cross is a genuine magnetic-core EKII with silver frame, its iron centre still responsive to magnetism. The case measures 7.5 cm x 9.5 cm when closed. Retains hinge, clasp and internal spring bar (detached at one end).

Historical Note:
Instituted in 1813 by King Friedrich Wilhelm III, the Iron Cross was reissued in 1870 and again in 1914 under Kaiser Wilhelm II, becoming Imperial Germany’s most recognisable award for bravery. Soldiers often transformed their medals or battlefield relics into trench art creations, producing deeply personal souvenirs of service.

*Condition*
Original, uncleaned condition with rich patina to brass and silver surfaces. The iron core exhibits typical oxidation and dark toning. Internal spring bar present on LHS but not on RHS; hinge firm, closure secure. No evidence of modern restoration or polishing. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
