This is a prime example of the M1898/05 Bayonet (Seitengewehr), the most common German bayonet of World War I, designed for the Mauser Gewehr 98 (GEW 98) service rifle. It features a robust 14.5-inch steel "butcher blade," characterized by its distinct bulge towards the point for added weight and power. The full name is "S1898/05 S n/A", S for Seitengewehr - meaning side-arm, 1898 being the year of introduction and 1905 the year of modification to that current form. S stands for the german word for sawback, and n/A stands for 'neuer Art' or "newer model", and it lacks the first pattern's vestigial muzzle ring ('ears') and includes a flashguard on the back of the grip. Production of this n/A bayonet ran from 1915 to 1917 only.
This particular bayonet has a desirable "sawback" blade, originally intended for use by pioneers to cut through brush and obstacles. Due to rumors that it was designed to inflict severe harm on enemies, many sawback bayonets had this feature removed, making intact versions rare.
