*Imperial German, WW1,  7.7 cm Feldkanone 96 n.A. Shell Case, by Patronenfabrik Karlsruhe, Dated May 1917*

An original Imperial German First World War artillery cartridge case, clearly dated Mai 1917 and marked to Patronenfabrik Karlsruhe, one of the principal German ammunition manufacturers of the Great War.

The case is of straight-sided rimmed form with pronounced base flange, and is stamped to the head St 317 / Mai 1917 / PatronenFabrik Karlsruhe / Sp255. The dimensions — 22.9 cm in height and 9 cm base diameter — correspond to the standard 77 × 230 mm R cartridge case used with the 7.7 cm Feldkanone 96 n.A. (neuer Art), the primary light field gun of the Imperial German Army during the First World War. Approx. Measurements – Height: 22.9 cm. Base diameter: 9 cm.

The headstamp markings record the full production history of the case. Patronenfabrik Karlsruhe was a major wartime producer of artillery and small-arms ammunition. The date Mai 1917 places manufacture during the middle period of the war. The marking St is generally interpreted as Stark (strengthened), indicating a reinforced case pattern introduced during wartime production, while 317 represents the lot or batch number. The inspection mark Sp255 is a military acceptance or control stamp, commonly associated with German arsenal inspection, often attributed to Spandau.

Historical Note:
The 7.7 cm Feldkanone 96 n.A. was the standard German field gun of the First World War, used for both direct and indirect fire support on all fronts from 1914 onward. Its fixed ammunition used a brass or steel cartridge case approximately 230 mm in length, making surviving cases of this size readily identifiable when original markings are present. Dated examples from 1917 represent the period of peak German wart production.
