*German, WWII, Kriegsmarine Minesweeper, Sub-Chaser & Escort Vessel War Badge*
An original WWII German Kriegsmarine Minesweeper, Sub-Chaser & Escort Vessel War Badge measuring approximately 4.9 cm x 5.5 cm. The obverse displays the classic pattern: a tall plume from a detonating sea mine rising from stylised waves, all enclosed within an oak-leaf wreath and topped with the Kriegsmarine eagle. The finishes have largely faded through age, service wear leaving fragments of the original gilt and silvered surfaces. The reverse is unmarked and fitted with the standard hinge block, rolled hinge, broad tapering pin and open C-catch associated with unmarked wartime production.
Historical Note: Instituted by Grand Admiral Erich Raeder on 31 August 1940, the badge recognised the dangerous and laborious work carried out by personnel of the minesweeping, U-boat hunting, escort and coastal security units of the Kriegsmarine. These duties were among the most hazardous of naval war service, with constant exposure to mines, air attack and the risks of working in shallow, confined waters. Late-war badges were often produced in simplified alloys due to material shortages, and many surviving examples show the characteristic breakdown of their finishes over time.
