*German, WWII, Kriegsmarine 1940 Narvik Campaign Shield on Original Navy Wool Backing — Very Good Condition*

An excellent, original example of the German Narvik Campaign Shield (Narvikschild), awarded to Kriegsmarine personnel who took part in the combined sea, air, and land operations around Narvik, Norway, between April and June 1940. Struck in zinc with a bronze wash finish, the shield displays sharp detailing throughout: the national eagle and wreath above the “NARVIK / 1940” scroll, flanked by the Edelweiss flower and crossed propeller and anchor, symbolising the joint forces of mountain troops, Luftwaffe, and Navy.

This example is factory-mounted to its correct dark blue wool backing, as worn by naval ratings, with the original wartime paper stiffener still present to the reverse — a scarce survival. The shield retains an attractive untouched patina, showing only light wear to the high points. A desirable and fully genuine Kriegsmarine-issue shield, ready for display or restoration to a uniform.

Approximate Measurements: 9 cm x 4.2 cm.

Historical Note:
Instituted on 19 August 1940, the Narvik Shield recognised those who participated in the strategically pivotal campaign for the port of Narvik during the invasion of Norway. The bitter fighting — including major naval engagements in the Ofotfjord — saw destroyers, Gebirgsjäger mountain troops, and Luftwaffe units battling British, French, Polish, and Norwegian forces. Although Germany ultimately secured Narvik, the struggle highlighted both the importance of Arctic supply routes and the future strategic value of Norway’s coastline. Naval-issue examples of the Narvik Shield are significantly scarcer than Heer or Luftwaffe variants, enhancing their collectability.

*Condition*
Very good original condition overall, with a strong, clean obverse showing well-preserved detail and honest age patina.
