*German, WW2, Wound Badge in Black (Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz)*
Die-struck in a non-magnetic tombak alloy — a desirable early wartime construction — with the majority of the original black painted finish now worn away, revealing the bronze-coloured base metal. The obverse displays the standard pattern of a German M35 steel helmet with swastika above crossed swords, set against a textured pebble background and surrounded by a laurel wreath. Reverse with original hardware (hinge is the standard barrel type, catch is missing).
Measurements: Approx. 4.5 cm x 3.8 cm
Historical Note:
This badge was instituted on 1 September 1939 and awarded to Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS personnel (as well as other authorised recipients) who suffered one or two wounds as a result of enemy action. The Black Wound Badge represented the 3rd Class grade within the series, with Silver (2nd Class) awarded for three to four wounds, and Gold (1st Class) for five or more wounds or particularly severe injuries. It was one of the most widely bestowed bravery and service-related combat badges of the war.
*Condition* Original example showing honest wear from age and service use. Significant loss of the original black finish with bronze metal now visible, small patches of verdigris, but with strong detail retained throughout. The hinge and pin remain original and fully functioning; however, the retaining clasp/catch has broken away, so the badge cannot be fastened securely. Good detail overall with no repairs to the body of the badge. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
