This pair of Carl Zeiss U-boat binoculars, marked “blc,” demonstrates the vital role of precision optics in naval warfare during World War II. Manufactured by the esteemed Carl Zeiss Jena, these binoculars combine optical brilliance with German engineering excellence. With exceptional clarity and a robust design, these binoculars provided U-boat crews with a critical advantage in spotting and identifying targets at sea. The right shoulder is marked with “7×50 48676 blc”.The original lens protector is marked "Benutzer" on the outside and numbered "11944" on the inside.
7x50 binoculars were frequently used on the submarines during WW2, because on a small ship the higher magnification of the binocular the harder it was to use in rough weather. The 7x50's with a large depth of focus needed very little focusing adjustment either for distance or individuals making them well suited to the submarine environment. They also fitted naturally into the hands of sailors as they were often wearing gloves.
Their specialized construction, including features like rubber eyecups to shield from saltwater spray, showcases the attention to detail required for maritime operations.
