*German, WW2 Style, Large Totenkopf (Death’s Head) Skull Cap Badge, Brass Construction, Two Lugs*
A large brass Totenkopf (Death’s Head) skull and crossbones cap badge in the style associated with German military insignia of the early twentieth century. The badge depicts a skull with prominent eye sockets, nasal cavity and grinning teeth, positioned above crossed bones.
The piece is struck in brass with a slightly domed form and retains a pleasing aged patina across the surface. The reverse is fitted with two brass wire lugs for attachment to a cap or fabric headgear.
The design follows the traditional Totenkopf motif, historically used by various German cavalry and later armoured formations as a symbol of fearlessness and martial tradition.

History Note:
The Totenkopf (“Death’s Head”) emblem has a long association with German military units. The symbol first gained prominence in the eighteenth century with elite cavalry formations such as the 1st Leib-Husaren Regiment Nr. 1 and 2nd Leib-Husaren Regiment Nr. 2, whose soldiers wore skull insignia on their distinctive fur busbies.
The tradition continued into the twentieth century and the emblem later appeared on headgear used by certain formations of the Schutzstaffel during World War II. The skull symbolised a willingness to face death in battle and became one of the most recognisable motifs associated with German military heraldry.
Badges of this type were worn on caps and field headgear and were normally attached using soldered loops or prongs fitted to the reverse.
