On June 21st, 1935, the German Wehrmacht officially selected the Karabiner 98k (abbreviated as “kurz,” meaning “short”) as its standard service rifle, a role it maintained throughout World War II. This bolt-action rifle, chambered in 8mm Mauser (7.92 x 57), features an internal 5-round magazine.
The top of the receiver is marked with the German war time manufacturers code “bcd” for production by Gustloff Werke, a major manufacturer that had their K98k assembly plant at Weimar. They were well known for using forced labor, especially later in the war. The left receiver wall is marked “Mod. 98”. It is serial numbered “2992 q”. It is numbered 2992 on the stock and in electro-pencil on the bolt, the magazine, the trigger guard and the sight (overwriting some other numbers). Numerous waffenamts throughout.
