*German, WW2, Mess Tin with Original Black Paint (As Issued to SS)*

An original German WW2 Kochgeschirr (mess tin), finished in its original black field paint, as issued to Waffen-SS troops. The tin retains its characteristic kidney shape, with a hinged lid and wire carrying handle. It measures approx. 15cm tall, 16cm wide, and 8cm deep.

The lid bears scratched inscriptions, including the name “Carlen” and the numbers “4257”, likely denoting either a soldier’s roll number or partial service number. The inner surfaces retain their original aluminium finish, while the outer paint shows honest wartime wear with areas of rubbing and scratching, consistent with frontline use.

Historical Note:
The German mess tin (Kochgeschirr M31) was standard issue across all Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS branches. Early and mid-war Wehrmacht tins were most commonly painted field grey or green, whereas Waffen-SS examples were frequently finished in black paint, giving this example strong association with SS use. Each tin was designed for dual use as a cooking vessel and eating container, the lid doubling as a plate or small pan.

*Condition*
This example remains in solid condition with no structural damage. The black paint shows field wear, scratches, and surface rubbing from use and carrying. The lid hinge and handle are complete and functional, with light rusting to steel components. The interior is relatively clean, retaining its tinned finish with some age-related marks. Inscriptions scratched into the lid add a personal touch, enhancing its collectability.
