*German, WW2, M31 Canteen with original Wool Cover & Straps, Dated & Marked CFL37, W.A.L.40, E. Bechstein*
An original German Wehrmacht M31 pattern field canteen (Feldflasche), measuring approximately 22cm x 15cm x 7cm, complete with its wool cover, aluminium body, leather strap, and aluminium screw cap. The canteen throat is stamped W.A.L. 40, identifying Westfälische Aluminium-Industrie AG, Lüdenscheid (1940 production), while the cap bears CFL 37 for Carl Feldhaus, Lüdenscheid (1937 production). The original brown leather harness strap is embossed E. Bechstein, a leather goods contractor supplying the Wehrmacht. The mix of pre-war and wartime components reflects the common Wehrmacht practice of reissuing and combining serviceable parts across campaigns.
Historical Note:
The M31 Feldflasche was standard issue for the German Wehrmacht from its adoption in 1931 until the end of WWII. Millions were produced by various subcontractors, with aluminium chosen for its light weight. The wool felt cover provided insulation and noise reduction, while the leather strap allowed attachment to the soldier’s breadbag or belt. Contractors such as Carl Feldhaus, W.A.L., and Bechstein supplied components that were assembled into completed issue canteens. Mixed-date pieces such as this one were extremely common in the field, illustrating how Germany’s wartime supply system prioritised efficiency and reuse. Far from detracting, the presence of three distinct wartime maker marks (CFL, W.A.L. and E. Bechstein) enhances the value and collector appeal of this canteen, as it demonstrates authentic Wehrmacht supply practice and provides excellent provenance.
*Condition*
The canteen remains in fair, original condition. The aluminium body is solid and retains clear markings. The screw cap threads smoothly, with its gasket, chain, and retaining hook intact. The wool felt cover is present but shows notable moth damage and field wear, particularly on the rear and base. The brown leather strap exhibits age cracking and surface wear but remains supple, complete, and clearly stamped with the Bechstein maker’s name. Metal fittings show light patina consistent with wartime use. Overall, this is a genuine and well-marked Wehrmacht canteen with three distinct factory stamps, making it a desirable addition to a German WWII field equipment collection.
