The Iron Cross is a military decoration, awarded for bravery in battle as well as other military contributions in a battlefield environment. The “24” inscribed on the loop indicates that this particular cross was made by Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Hanauer Plakettenhersteller of Hanau. It is complete with original ribbon which would have been used for every day wear.The official criteria for the award was a single act of bravery in the face of the enemy, or actions that were clearly above and beyond the call of duty.

The original envelope is marked on the obverse: "Eisernes Kreuz - 2, Klasse - 1939" and on the reverse: "Frank & Reif, Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen".
