*German, WW2, Fallschirmjäger (paratroopers) Luftwaffe AK 39 Wrist Compass (Fl. 23235-1) – Serial No. 3028*
An original WWII Luftwaffe pilot’s wrist compass, model AK 39, manufactured for the German Air Ministry and issued to fighter and bomber aircrew from 1939 onwards. Constructed with a black Bakelite case (approx. 5.6 cm diameter, 2.2 cm depth) and domed ribbed Perspex bezel, complete with its original black leather strap and metal buckle.
The luminous cream dial features degree markings (0–33), a floating magnetic card with red “N” indicator, and black directional markers. The reverse is clearly marked: “AK 39 / Fl.23235-1” with impressed serial number 3028.
This example represents the second pattern (Fl.23235-1) – the white-backed model incorporating rifle-type sighting aids and dual rotating semi-circular discs on the underside for course setting. The earlier plain black version (Fl.23235), featured only a luminous lubber’s line for orientation. The prefix “Fl” stands for Fliegermaterial (aeronautical materiel), denoting official Luftwaffe equipment issue.
Historical Note: The letters AK denote Armband-Kompass (wrist compass), while 39 refers to the year of introduction, 1939. The model was developed under Luftwaffe specification by Kadlec & Söhne, later absorbed by Askania Werke AG, Berlin, following Germany’s annexation of Czechoslovakia that same year.
Designed for emergency navigation, the AK 39 was worn over the flight suit or wrist and served both in-flight orientation and post-bailout survival. Its robust Bakelite body and luminous indicators made it suitable for night or over-water use. Later, a modified AK 39a version was issued to Kriegsmarine U-boat crews.
