*German, WW2 - Dated 1942, Hitler Youth (Hitlerjugend) Dagger & Scabbard, RZM M7/11 – Ernst Knecht & Co., Solingen*

An original Second World War Hitler Youth (Hitlerjugend) dagger, ricasso marked M7/11 (Contractor number assigned to Ernst Knecht & Co., Solingen), RZM (Reichszeugmeisterei - Nazi Party supply and quality control authority) 1942, complete with its magnetic steel scabbard and leather belt loop.

The blade is plain and single-edged, characteristic of late-period production, and retains a clear RZM circular logo to the ricasso together with the code M7/11 and the date 1942.  The grip is fitted with black chequered Bakelite grip plates secured by two domed rivets. The enamel HJ diamond is intact and well seated, showing expected age but retaining good colour. The hilt fittings are the standard late pattern, finished in plated alloy, now showing honest service wear and age patina.

The scabbard is of seamless sheet steel construction, magnetic, and retains its black painted finish with associated age-related wear. The leather belt loop and securing strap remain present, with original fittings.

1942 production examples are widely regarded by collectors as representing the final full year of Hitler Youth dagger manufacture.

Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 13.8 cm. Overall length: 24.5 cm.

Historical Note:
The Hitler Youth (Hitlerjugend, HJ) was founded in 1922 as the youth organisation of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP). Following the Nazi rise to power in 1933, the organisation expanded rapidly and, by 1936, membership effectively became compulsory for German boys aged 10 to 18. The official Hitler Youth knife was introduced in 1933 as both a symbolic and functional sidearm, awarded to members who had passed prescribed physical and ideological requirements. It became one of the most recognisable accoutrements of the organisation.

By the late 1930s, production of HJ daggers had been centralised under the authority of the Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM), which standardised manufacture and allocated contractor codes to approved makers. As the war progressed, material shortages and industrial rationalisation led to noticeable changes in construction. Late-period examples (circa 1938–1942), such as this dagger, typically exhibit plain blades without the earlier etched motto “Blut und Ehre!”, RZM-coded ricasso markings in place of traditional maker trademarks, slightly heavier blade profiles with higher ricasso placement, moulded Bakelite grip plates secured by simple rivets, and plated alloy hilt fittings of more utilitarian finish. These features reflect wartime economies rather than the higher finish associated with early production pieces.

This example was manufactured by Ernst Knecht & Co., Stahlwarenfabrik, Solingen, a firm established in 1905 and formally registered in 1906. Originally producing cutlery and edged tools, the company expanded into the manufacture of SA and Hitler Youth daggers during the Third Reich period. In 1935 it was assigned the RZM contractor code M7/11 and operated from Wüstenhof Nr. 11, Solingen. Records indicate the business was under the ownership of Adele Knecht in 1939. Daggers dated 1942 are widely regarded as representing the final full year of Hitler Youth knife production.

*Condition*
The blade shows overall age-related surface staining and oxidation consistent with storage and service wear. The ricasso markings remain clear and legible. The grip plates are sound with minor handling marks. The enamel HJ diamond remains intact without major damage. The hilt retains its form with natural patination. The scabbard paint shows expected wear and minor surface marks. The leather belt loop is present with age-related dryness and wear but remains structurally intact. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
