*German, WW2, Black M43 Field Cap (Einheitsfeldmütze) with SS Trapezoidal Insignia*
A striking German Second World War black M43 field cap, produced in the classic Einheitsfeldmütze pattern and retaining the iconic eagle and Totenkopf trapezoidal insignia to the front. Instantly recognisable as one of the defining forms of late-war German military headgear, the cap combines the distinctive black Panzer-style appearance with the practical cold-weather configuration introduced during the latter years of the war.
The cap is constructed in black wool cloth with the characteristic short projecting visor and wraparound fold-down ear and neck flaps secured by two front buttons. The front bears a machine-woven black trapezoidal insignia patch featuring the Wehrmacht-style eagle above the Totenkopf skull motif, stitched directly to the crown in the classic wartime manner. The black wool construction gives the cap the unmistakable appearance associated with German armoured and Panzer formations of the period.
One of the most attractive features of the example is the fully functioning winter flap arrangement, which can be worn secured in standard field-cap form or extended downward to protect the ears and neck in cold weather conditions. Internally, the cap retains its pale tan cotton lining, while externally it displays with an excellent untouched wartime appearance and strong overall form.
History Note;
The M43 field cap was introduced by Germany in 1943 as a simplified universal combat cap, derived in part from earlier mountain troop ski-cap designs. Practical, warm, and economical to produce, it quickly became one of the defining items of late-war German military uniform. During the Second World War, the Waffen-SS — the military arm of the SS organisation — expanded into a major combat force comprising infantry, armoured, and Panzer divisions fighting alongside the regular German Army. The black field cap and Totenkopf insignia became among the most recognisable symbols associated with these formations during the conflict.
*Condition*
Very good overall condition with strong display presence. The black wool body retains excellent shape and colour with light age and storage wear visible, including some minor linting and handling marks consistent with period use. Stitching remains secure throughout, the fold-down flaps remain fully functional, and both front buttons are intact. The woven insignia remains clear and sharply defined, while the internal lining survives well with expected age-related wear. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
