*German, WW2, Auxiliary Cruiser Badge (Hilfskreuzerabzeichen), maker marked 'JMME & Sohn Berlin'*

This is a fine example of the Auxiliary Cruiser Badge awarded to officers and crew of Kriegsmarine commerce raiders (auxiliary cruisers) who undertook long-range missions disrupting Allied merchant shipping. Instituted by Grand Admiral Raeder in April 1941, the badge features a Viking longship sailing over the globe, surrounded by a gilt oak leaf wreath surmounted by a Wehrmacht eagle and swastika.

This example is die-struck, with a two-tone finish: a gilt longship and wreath, and a darker globe depicting Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia. The reverse is marked "JMME & Sohn Berlin" — the mark of J. M. Eck & Sohn, a recognized wartime maker.

It retains the original wide flat pin, hinge, and catch assembly, correct for this maker.

*Condition*
The badge shows typical age-related wear, with some loss to the original gilding, especially on high points of the ship and wreath. The globe retains much of its darkened finish, providing strong contrast. The reverse has an attractive dark patina and clear maker marking. The pin mechanism is intact and functional. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.

Historical Note:
The Kriegsmarine Auxiliary Cruiser Badge was instituted on April 24, 1941, by order of Grand Admiral Erich Raeder. It was awarded to recognize the exceptional feats of the crews serving aboard Germany’s armed merchant raiders (Hilfskreuzer). These ships operated disguised as neutral or Allied cargo vessels but were secretly heavily armed, roaming vast ocean areas to disrupt and destroy Allied merchant shipping. Their surprise attacks and deceptive tactics caused significant losses to Allied supply lines before most were eventually hunted down and sunk. These missions could last over a year at sea. Famous raiders included the Atlantis, Kormoran, and Thor. The badge was awarded for participation in a successful long-range voyage, for demonstrating outstanding leadership or bravery, or for being wounded during such missions. It symbolizes the daring, endurance, and ingenuity of these extended, often solitary sea operations far from home waters.
