An original inert WWII German 50 mm mortar round, as fired by the 5 cm Granatwerfer 36 (leGrW 36) light infantry mortar. This example stands approximately 22.3 cm tall, with an eight-fin tail assembly measuring approximately 5 cm across, and retains its original steel body and tail unit.
The round is fitted with its correct black plastic (Bakelite-type) nose fuze, clearly marked “Wgr ZT blw 43” and bearing the Waffenamt inspection stamp WaA634. The fuze remains tightly seated, and the internal body cavity is visible, confirming the round is empty.
The steel body shows extensive surface oxidation, consistent with age and loss of original paint, but retains multiple faint factory and inspection stamps, numerical batch markings, and letter codes, all applied during wartime manufacture. The tail tube is hollow with correct gas vent ports, and the fins remain solid and intact.
Historical Note:
The 5 cm Granatwerfer 36 was the standard German light infantry mortar from the late 1930s through the early–mid years of the Second World War. Designed to provide mobile close-support fire at squad level, it fired a relatively light 0.9 kg projectile with an effective range of approximately 500–550 metres.
By 1943, the weapon was increasingly regarded as underpowered, and production of both mortars and ammunition was phased down in favour of heavier systems. Ammunition dated 1943, such as this example, represents late-period manufacture.
The fuze is marked with the manufacturer code “blw”, identifying Wegmann & Co. of Kassel, a major German wartime producer of ordnance components. The WaA634 Waffenamt acceptance mark confirms official German Army inspection and acceptance.
