*German, WW2: 1936–1944, “Unterseebootsflottille Saltzwedel” Cap Tally*

A well-preserved black rayon Kriegsmarine-style Mützenband embroidered “Unterseebootsflottille Saltzwedel” in gilt thread, measuring approximately 118.5 cm in length and 3.4 cm in width. The script follows the standard Gothic type introduced for naval tallies in 1929, with the lettering executed in bright machine embroidery on a black ribbon. Examples of this exact pattern are known in several collections and catalogues, and are consistent with privately purchased or later-issue tallies produced for flotilla veterans and commemorative use after the Second World War. Light surface marks and handling wear.

Historical Note
The Saltzwedel designation refers to the 2nd U-Boat Flotilla, formed on 1 September 1936 and named in honour of Oberleutnant zur See Reinhold Saltzwedel, one of Germany’s highest-scoring First World War U-boat commanders. Initially based in Kiel before moving to Wilhelmshaven, the flotilla operated front-line U-boats throughout the early and mid-war period. In total, 89 U-boats served under its command until the flotilla was disbanded in August 1944 following severe operational losses.

Kriegsmarine cap tallies were worn on the traditional sailor’s cap and normally displayed the wearer’s ship or formation until the 1938/39 mobilisation regulations standardised most tallies to the single word “Kriegsmarine”. Nevertheless, named tallies for U-boat flotillas continued to exist through private purchase, earlier manufacture, and post-war veteran production, resulting in the variety of surviving examples encountered today.

*Condition*
The ribbon remains in clean, supple condition with good colour retention to the black rayon and strong definition to the gilt machine embroidery. Light surface creasing and minor handling marks are present along the length, consistent with age and storage. The ends are angled-cut with light fraying. Stitching on the reverse shows some loose fibres but is intact throughout. No tears, holes, or significant stains noted; overall a well-preserved example. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
