*German, Kingdom of Saxony, c.1854–1873 M1840 Faschinenmesser Pioneer Short Sword by W.R. Kirschbaum Solingen, Crowned JR Cypher*
A scarce and impressive Kingdom of Saxony M.1840 Faschinenmesser pioneer short sword, stamped with the crowned Johann Rex cypher of King Johann of Saxony (1854–1873) and produced by the renowned Solingen maker W.R. Kirschbaum, a fine example of the heavy engineer swords issued to German pioneer and artillery units during the mid-19th century.
This heavy utilitarian sword follows the Model 1840 pioneer pattern, a design widely issued to engineer, pioneer and artillery troops throughout the German states. These swords served a dual purpose as both tools and weapons, used for clearing brush, cutting fascines and assisting in the construction of field fortifications.
The blade bears two clear inspection and maker’s stamps near the ricasso. One side shows the royal cypher of King Johann of Saxony – a crowned “JR” (Johann Rex), confirming issue to Saxon forces during his reign between 1854 and 1873. The opposite side displays a helmeted knight’s head trademark, associated with the renowned Solingen sword maker W.R. Kirschbaum, one of the principal suppliers of edged weapons to the German states during the mid-19th century.
The sword retains its original cast brass hilt with ribbed grip, rounded pommel and distinctive S-shaped crossguard, a form typical of German pioneer swords of this period. The blade is broad and heavy with a slightly clipped working tip, reflecting its practical role as a cutting tool in military engineering work.
Pieces bearing both a state royal cypher and Solingen maker’s mark are particularly desirable to collectors of German military edged weapons.
Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 47.5 cm. Overall length: 61.8 cm.
History Note: The Faschinenmesser (“fascine knife”) was carried by pioneer and artillery units of many German armies during the 19th century. These troops were responsible for engineering work such as clearing obstacles, building defensive positions and preparing battlefield terrain. The heavy short sword allowed soldiers to cut timber, brush and fascines while also serving as a sidearm.
The Kingdom of Saxony maintained its own military forces until the unification of Germany under Prussian leadership. Weapons such as this were produced by the great blade-making houses of Solingen, including Kirschbaum, which supplied military contracts across the German states.
*Condition* The sword remains in solid, untouched condition showing honest age and service wear. The blade displays scattered age staining, pitting and dark patina consistent with a mid-19th century steel blade, but remains structurally sound with no visible cracks. The edge appears intact with no major damage. The brass hilt retains a pleasing aged patina with handling marks and minor surface wear. The guard shows a small amount of movement typical of swords of this age but remains secure overall. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
