*German, c.1936–1945 (Third Reich period), Sicherheitspolizei (SiPo) Telescopic Spring Steel Baton (Stahlrute), Marked “SIPO / D.R.P.”*

An original German spring-steel telescopic police baton (stahlrute), of the type issued to units of the Sicherheitspolizei (SiPo) during the 1930s period. The baton comprises a hollow steel tube handle containing a two-stage coiled spring shaft which extends by pulling and locks open with a clockwise twist of the handle. The spring terminates in a solid steel impact tip.

The end cap is stamped in relief “SIPO”, identifying issue to the Sicherheitspolizei (Security Police), with the additional marking “D.R.P.” indicating Deutsches Reichspatent — a protected German patent design under the Reich patent system. A brown leather wrist strap remains fitted to the handle, consistent with period police equipment.

The mechanism remains intact, extending smoothly from a compact carry size to full operational length.

Approx. Measurements – Compressed length: 16 cm. Extended length: 39.3 cm.

Historical Note:
The term SiPo (Sicherheitspolizei) was used in Nazi Germany for the combined state security policing apparatus, bringing together the Gestapo (Geheime Staatspolizei) and the Kriminalpolizei (Kripo) under central control following reforms initiated in 1936. These agencies were responsible for political surveillance, criminal investigation and internal security enforcement.

Collapsible spring batons such as this were designed as discreet but highly effective close-quarters control weapons. Unlike rigid truncheons, the heavy spring shaft delivered considerable force upon impact, while the compact closed size allowed easy concealment or carriage on plain-clothes duty. They were primarily associated with police and security personnel rather than military issue.

The D.R.P. marking confirms the item was manufactured to an officially patented design, a feature seen on period German police equipment and an indicator of pre- or wartime manufacture. Surviving examples with clear SiPo markings are increasingly scarce, particularly when retaining their original leather wrist hanger and functioning extension mechanism.

*Condition*
Overall very good, honest service condition. The steel body retains areas of original finish with age-related surface wear, oxidation and handling marks consistent with operational use. The spring mechanism extends and retracts correctly but does not locks. End cap markings “SIPO” and “D.R.P.” remain visible. Leather wrist strap present with expected age wear and dryness but structurally sound. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
