*German, c.1928–32, Badge “Graf Zeppelin (LZ-127)” – maker FLL (Friedrich Linden, Lüdenscheid)*

A circular bronze souvenir badge approximately 44 mm in diameter, issued to commemorate the celebrated German rigid airship LZ‑127 Graf Zeppelin. The obverse features a relief depiction of the airship in climb amid stylised cloud-and-sky lines, surrounded by a bright yellow enamel outer ring bearing the legend: “GRAF ZEPPELIN – LUFTSCHIFF LZ 127”. The reverse retains the original fixed horizontal safety-pin mounting and is impressed with the maker’s mark of FLL (i.e., “Friedrich Linden, Lüdenscheid”), operating in Lüdenscheid, Germany. The pin mechanism remains intact and the enamel is complete with only light wear consistent with age.

Historical Note:
The LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin was the most successful airship ever built and the flagship of German long-range aviation in the late 1920s and 1930s. Launched in 1928 and commanded by Dr. Hugo Eckener, the vast 236 m vessel carried around 20 passengers and 36 crew, powered by five Maybach engines running largely on Blau gas to conserve lift.

During its nine-year career, the Graf Zeppelin completed 590 flights, including 144 ocean crossings, and covered over 1.7 million km without a single passenger injury. It inaugurated the first regular commercial transatlantic passenger and mail service, made the celebrated 1929 round-the-world flight, and undertook the important 1931 Arctic scientific expedition.

Withdrawn after the Hindenburg disaster in 1937, the airship was finally dismantled in 1940. Surviving period memorabilia—such as enamel badges produced by firms like Friedrich Linden (FLL)—are now regarded as evocative relics of the golden age of airship travel.

Collectors have long noted that these badges appear in several enamel-border colours, with some suggesting that the colours may have denoted different issue types or staff roles, though no contemporary documentation has been found to confirm this.

*Condition*
The badge is in Very Good condition. The enamel is intact, glossy and shows only minor edge wear; the bronze surface retains even patina with no evidence of modern polishing or re-enamelling. The pin fitting is original and functioning. The FLL mark is crisp and properly located. There are no visible cracks in the enamel or signs of major repair. The overall presentation is entirely consistent with high-grade Weimar-era souvenir badges. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
