This is a French model 1866 Chassepot sword bayonet with its scabbard.

This model was manufactured to be used with several rifles but it was initially designed for the M1866 Chassepot rifle.

This example was made in December 1867 at the French State Arsenal, Manufacture Imperiale de Tulle, as can be seen etched on the edge of the blade.

The quillon guard is stamped “L4436”. One side of the blade is stamped “3” and the other “F” in a circle and star above “S” in a circle. Please refer to the pictures.

The bayonet has the correct steel hooked quillon with muzzle ring, a ribbed brass grip with flat spring and steel push button.

It is complete with the correct scabbard made of black painted sheet steel.

~ Dimensions ~

The blade is 22 ½ (57 cm) long and the overall length of the bayonet is 27 inches (69 cm).

The length of the bayonet in its scabbard is 28 ¼ inches (72 cm).

It weighs 1 kg.

~ Condition ~

The blade developed a patina and some amount of age pitting. It is fair for its age.

The brass grip has traces of green oxide that can be clean with ease.

The spring safety button works fine.

The quillon guard is heavily pitted.
