French M1866 Chassepot Sword Bayonet & Steel Scabbard #1

This is a French model 1866 Chassepot sword bayonet with its scabbard.

This model was manufactured to be used with several rifles but it was initially designed for the M1866 Chassepot rifle.

The quillon guard is stamped “U19466” and bears a series of proofmarks. One side of the blade is stamped “PDL”. Please refer to the pictures.

The bayonet has the correct steel hooked quillon with muzzle ring, a ribbed brass grip with flat spring and steel push button.

It is complete with the correct scabbard made of black painted sheet steel. The scabbard is serial numbered “E76449”.

~ Dimensions ~

The blade is 22 ½ (57 cm) long and the overall length of the bayonet is 27 inches (69 cm).

The length of the bayonet in its scabbard is 28 ¼ inches (72 cm).

It weighs 1 Kg.

~ Condition ~

The blade developed a patina and some amount of age pitting towards the top. It is in good condition for its age.

The brass grip has traces of wear, as expected.

The spring safety button is jammed.
