*French, Dated 1877, Model 1874 Gras Sword Bayonet & Scabbard, St. Etienne Arsenal, Matching Numbers*
A highly collectible example of the French Model 1874 “Gras” sword bayonet, dated May 1877, produced at the famed Manufacture d’Armes de St. Étienne. Designed for the M1874 Gras rifle — France’s first general-issue rifle for metallic cartridges — this bayonet is a true transitional piece bridging traditional sword-style designs and modern bayonet forms.
This example features a robust "T-backed" triangular blade, measuring approximately 52.1 cm in length (overall 64.7 cm). The spine is beautifully engraved in flowing cursive script: "Mre d’Armes de St. Étienne Mai 1877" — clearly visible and well-preserved. The crossguard retains its prominent swept quillon ("blade-breaker"), with matching serial number L 98038 stamped on both quillon and scabbard throat, confirming this as an original matched set — a sought-after detail among collectors. The hilt is constructed with solid walnut grip scales and a brass pommel incorporating the integral locking catch. The steel crossguard and blade surfaces display a rich, even age patina, with no active corrosion.
The scabbard is an original rolled steel type, complete with ball finial. It shows uniform wear and honest service patina, matching the bayonet nicely.
Background: The M1874 Gras bayonet replaced the needle-fire Chassepot bayonet, reflecting the shift to metallic cartridge rifles. It marked the end of the French "sword bayonet" era, making these pieces both historically and technically significant. Produced at Saint-Étienne, the main French military arsenal founded in 1764, these bayonets saw extensive use and represent a key point in late 19th-century military technology.
*Condition* Blade is bright with clear engraving, light surface marks consistent with age. Guard and pommel exhibit attractive untouched patina. Wood grips are solid, showing expected handling marks but no cracks or repairs. The scabbard has a deep blue-black patina with scattered small areas of pitting, no major dents, and remains structurally sound. Matching numbers significantly add to collector value.
