*French, c.1870–1900, Naval / Maritime Ceremonial Halberd, Coq Gaulois and Anchor Badge, Third Republic Period*

A French ceremonial halberd or guard polearm dating to the late 19th century, almost certainly associated with naval or maritime service during the period of the Third Republic. The steel head of halberd form incorporates a spear point, rear spike (bec de corbin), and broad crescent axe blade, together with a wide spatulate langet-block section designed to display a relief badge. This panel is fitted with an applied emblem depicting the Gallic rooster standing upon a fouled anchor, combining the traditional symbol of the French nation with the anchor of maritime service, an insignia closely associated with the Marine Nationale, maritime guards, and the French customs service (Douanes).

The badge appears to be separately applied rather than part of the original forging, most likely brazed or hard-soldered in place, a construction method commonly seen on ceremonial or outfitter-supplied polearms intended for guard, municipal, or naval administrative use. The langet-block form of the blade is specifically intended to provide a prominent surface for such insignia, reinforcing the weapon’s role as a visual symbol of state authority rather than a purely functional combat implement.

The head is mounted on a metal socket with inset turned wooden grip panels to either side, the grip terminating in a black corded tassel (dragonne). Tassels of this form are frequently encountered on French guard and naval polearms and are often associated with sous-officiers, guard detachments, or ceremonial marine personnel, the colour and style of the cord traditionally indicating branch or rank.

Approx. Measurements – Overall length: 64.6 cm. Blade length: 32.3 cm. Axe blade: 22.1 cm wide, 18.2 cm tall.

History Note:
By the mid to late 19th century the halberd had largely disappeared from battlefield use in France but continued in ceremonial, guard, and administrative roles, particularly within naval, colonial, and customs services. During the Third Republic (1870–1940) the Coq Gaulois became one of the principal symbols of the French nation, representing vigilance, pride, and the authority of the Republic, while the fouled anchor remained the traditional emblem of the Marine Nationale and other maritime institutions.

Polearms of this type were carried by sentries, shipboard guards, customs officers, and ceremonial detachments, serving both as a badge of authority and as part of formal uniform. The relatively short proportions, applied insignia, and decorative tassel all indicate manufacture for parade or guard duty rather than practical boarding or combat use, despite the strong naval symbolism.

Such examples are characteristic of the later 19th century and are most often encountered from the Third Republic period, when republican and maritime emblems were widely combined in official insignia.
