French 1866 Pattern Chassepot Bayonet (St Etienne 1868)

SKU: JAQ_3636104149* Categories: , Tags: ,

This sword bayonet has a single-edged, fullered blade that reaches 57.5cm in length along with a hooked quillon for catching enemy blades. The blade possibly reads “...d’armes au St Etienne, mai 1868” which translates to “... arms at St Etienne, May 1868”. The sword is complete with maker’s marks and serial number 45238. Recognisable by its long, curved blade this type of sword bayonet (Yataghan) was the most copied; used by many countries including Belgium, USA and Argentina. The French model was designed to fit on the Model 1866 Chassepot Rifled Infantry Musket, which was revolutionary in itself.

*Condition*

This sword bayonet is in great condition with some heavier patches of pitting and an excellent, undamaged hilt. Please see pictures for more detail as they form part of our condition report.
