*France, c.1960–1974, French Line Ocean Liner SS France Cap Tally (Ruban de Bachi), Compagnie Générale Transatlantique*
A classic mid-20th century French maritime cap tally for the famous French Line ocean liner SS France, one of the most celebrated transatlantic liners of the modern era.
The navy blue silk ribbon is embroidered in yellow thread with the ship’s name “FRANCE” in bold capital lettering. At the left is the French national tricolour, while at the right is the house flag of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT). The company flag incorporates the distinctive red globe emblem with the abbreviation “C.G.T.” above the wording “Cie Gle Transatlantique”, short for Compagnie Générale Transatlantique.
Cap tallies such as this were traditionally worn on the round sailor’s cap known in French as the bachi, identifying the ship or company to which the sailor belonged. In the post-war era they were also commonly produced as souvenirs for passengers and visitors aboard the great Atlantic liners.
Approx. Measurements – Length: 65 cm. Width: 3 cm.
History Note:
The ocean liner SS France was launched in 1960 and entered service in 1962 as the flagship of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. At the time she was the longest passenger ship in the world, operating the prestigious Le Havre–New York transatlantic route and becoming a symbol of French engineering, luxury and national prestige.
Following the decline of transatlantic liner travel and rising fuel costs after the 1973 oil crisis, the ship was withdrawn from service in 1974. She was later purchased by Norwegian Cruise Line and rebuilt as SS Norway, becoming one of the pioneering “mega-cruise ships” of the modern cruising era.
