*Excellent Australian, Victorian, c1883, Badge of the Colony and New South Wales Defence Force, Helmet Plate*
The Badge of the Colony and later the State of New South Wales, featuring a lion on the cross of St George with a star at each arm, was officially granted on July 4, 1876. James Barnet, the Colonial Architect, and Captain Francis Hixson R.N., commander of the Naval Brigade and later the Naval Forces, and President of the Marine Board, collaborated on its design.
In its largest form it became the helmet plate of the NSW Forces, which was adopted in 1883. A second notice two weeks later specified that a scarlet backing be worn and the practice remained until Federation when use of the plate was discontinued. The helmet was issued with a gilt finish and bronze for the permanent forces and in white metal for volunteers and partially paid forces.
Gilt and bronze helmet plate, 103mm high. At rear three loops attached.
Measures 8.5cm x 10.3cm
