*European Style Swept - Basket-Hilt Rapier Sword, Decorative Renaissance Style, Wire-Wrapped Grip, 116.5cm*

A decorative European-style swept-hilt rapier sword inspired by the elegant civilian duelling swords of the late Renaissance period. The sword features a complex openwork guard composed of multiple sweeping bars forming a protective cage around the hand, incorporating pierced shell plates in the characteristic “Pappenheimer” style associated with early 17th-century rapiers.

The hilt is fitted with a wire-wrapped grip providing secure handling and finished with a faceted pommel which acts as a counterweight to the long blade. The guard incorporates a knuckle bow, side rings and sweeping bars terminating in flattened button ends, creating the distinctive protective structure typical of swept-hilt rapiers.

The blade is straight and double edged with a pronounced central medial ridge, forming a stiff diamond cross-section suitable for thrusting. This type of blade construction reflects the historic purpose of the rapier as a civilian duelling weapon designed primarily for precise thrusting rather than cutting.

While based on historical forms popular in Europe between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, this example is a later decorative reproduction produced for display or theatrical purposes. The overall form closely follows the elegant proportions of historical rapiers while remaining suitable as a decorative piece.

Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 94 cm. Overall length: 116.5 cm.

Historical Note:
The rapier developed during the Renaissance as the principal civilian sidearm worn by gentlemen throughout much of Europe. Originating in Spain and Italy during the 16th century, the rapier quickly spread across Europe where it became both a practical duelling weapon and a symbol of social status.

Swept-hilt rapiers, such as the style represented here, emerged in the late 1500s as armourers experimented with increasingly elaborate hand protection. By the early 17th century the hilt had evolved into intricate frameworks of bars and rings designed to shield the hand while maintaining balance and elegance. The pierced shell plates seen on this example are reminiscent of the so-called “Pappenheimer” hilts associated with northern European sword makers of the early 1600s.

Rapiers remained fashionable civilian weapons until the later 17th century when they gradually evolved into the lighter small-sword carried during the 18th century.
