*English, 1645, 4½ lb Iron Cannonball, Battle of Naseby, with Wooden Base*

An original 17th-century cast-iron cannonball, weighing approximately 4½ pounds, attributed to the Battle of Naseby (14 June 1645). The shot measures approximately 7.5 cm (3 in) in diameter and is mounted on a simple turned wooden base (removable). The reverse is hand-inscribed “Naseby 1645”, identifying its purported battlefield origin. Displays a dark, stable patina with surface pitting consistent with age and ground recovery.

Historical Note:
The Battle of Naseby, fought on 14 June 1645 near Naseby village in Northamptonshire, was the decisive engagement of the English Civil War. Parliament’s New Model Army, commanded by Sir Thomas Fairfax and Oliver Cromwell, defeated King Charles I’s Royalist forces, effectively ending Royalist hopes of victory. The battle saw the use of field artillery and small ordnance on both sides, with roundshot of this weight typical of light guns such as the saker or minion used to target enemy formations. Battlefield recoveries from Naseby remain highly collectable relics of England’s defining civil conflict.

*Condition*
Solid, stable iron shot with even aged patina and light pitting consistent with long burial. Minor surface scaling and old impact bruising visible. Mounted to a removable wooden display base.
