A lovely hand carved jade figure of a mythical creature, dating to the Qing Dynasty era.
The nephrite jade is a translucent green in colour. The creature is crouching, with horns directed to the rear.
This mythical creature goes by different names in literature: Bixie - a kind of unicorn with rearward pointing horn, Chi-lin – A creature with a lion head, wings and bifurcated tail. In Cantonese it is ‘Pei Yao’.
The animal is regarded as the protector of the house and family.
