A large and heavy Chinese jade carving of an elephant, the symbol of strength, intelligence and wisdom.

Note how the legs are like those of a beast of prey. It is possible that the artist had never seen a living elephant at the time.

The carving is of a green/grey nephrite jade with dark specks and dates to the Qing dynasty (1644-1912) or earlier.

The piece measures 13 cm (5 inches) by 9 cm (3 ½ inches) by 5 cm (2 inches).
