*c.1800 Original Chinese Qing Dynasty, Single Jian Short Sword, with Scabbard - "The Gentleman of Weapons"*
This exquisite Jian sword is a remarkable representation of the Mid Qing Dynasty. The Jian is a Chinese double-edged short sword that has a rich history spanning over 2,500 years. Its earliest mention in Chinese sources dates back to the 7th century BCE, during the Spring and Autumn period, with one of the earliest known specimens being the famous Sword of Goujian.
In Chinese culture, the Jian is revered as "The Gentleman of Weapons" and holds a prominent place among the four major traditional weapons, alongside the gun (staff), qiang (spear), and dao (saber). Skilled practitioners of the Jian are known as jianke. While these swords are sometimes called taijijian or "tai chi swords" today, reflecting their use in taijiquan training, it's important to note that historically, there were no specific Jian types created exclusively for taijiquan.
This Jian features brass etched mounts and pommels, complemented by a ridged ebony grip. Notably, the grip includes a hole, a common feature in Qing era swords, which could be used for attaching a tassel. In historical contexts, these tassels could serve various purposes, such as acting as lanyards to secure the sword in combat. Some sword forms incorporated the tassel into their techniques, sometimes as an offensive tool. Some even claimed that tassels were embedded with metal wires or thin silk cords to impair vision and cause bleeding when used aggressively. In modern times, the tassel primarily serves a decorative function, and this particular Jian does not include one.
The scabbard is crafted from lacquered bamboo, creating a striking effect reminiscent of tortoiseshell, accentuated by brass mounts that enhance its elegance.
The sword is 55.2 cm overall with a 45 cm blade.
*Condition*
The sword is in very good order given its age but with some nicking to the blade. The scabbard has a few areas of loss of the lacquer. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
