*British Young Ensigns Light Cavalry Officer 1796 Pattern Sabre, by Osborn*

The 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Sabre stands as an iconic testament to the martial history of the British military. Designed for use by the cavalry during the Napoleonic Wars, this sabre showcases a blend of elegance and functionality. Its distinctive curved blade and single-edged design allowed for swift and devastating strikes from horseback. The sabre also features a hilt adorned with a stirrup guard to protect the wielder’s hand.

This one is typical of the officer pattern, with engraving, blueing and gilding to the blade, the grips are wire-wound. On the spine of the blade, is the inscription 'Harvey' perhaps the surname of the officer. This is one of the famous "G G" swords of this era (marked "G G" to the ricasso / forte). GG is said by some to stand for Solingen blade maker Gebruder Grah, while others claim it to be the stamp of English cutler and crown armaments supplier George Goodwin, however it is more likely that this is an Osborn sword as All Osborn marked officer swords have a G or GG stamp on the ricasso, it could also be an Osborn and Gunby sword as many, but not all Osborn and Gunby swords have a G or GG stamp. The blade is some 26.5 inches long (67cm) (shorter than the standard 32 - 33 inches in blade length) and was likely made for a young ensign (youth of 13 - 14 years of age) or for the young son of an officer. This sabre would make an excellent addition to any collection.

~ Condition ~
This sabre is in good condition commensurate with its age and service. It has some discolouration to the blade making the engraving hard to see and the blade is nicked in many places. The top of the grip has had some damage but remains strong and functional. Please see pictures as part of the condition report.
